High-Security Fit-Out | Fire-Rated Partitions & SFS Bulkheads for M&S at Manchester Airport T2
JWL Interiors were honoured to be chosen to work on the new Marks & Spencer retail unit within Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport. We won this project by passing thorough, rigorous security and documentation checks. This included providing all necessary risk assessments, method statements, and insurance policies for working airside. Customer's Challenge
The project required meticulous segregation of the space with specific fire-rating requirements throughout the back-of-house. The most significant technical challenge was the front shopfront bulkhead. This required a bespoke design and a stronger structural system to safely support the substantial weight of the new M&S signage. Compliant fire-stopping and robust construction were essential for this high-traffic area.
Our Solution
Firstly, we built 1-hour fire rated stud partition walls to securely separate the shop floor from the stockroom. Secondly, we installed 30-minute fire rated metal stud partition walls for the internal stores and office areas. Next we had to support the demanding weight of the signage, we constructed the front bulkhead using SFS stud work. This heavier-duty C-section metal system provides far greater strength than standard profiles, therefore resulting in a sturdier high-quality finish.
We built the internal partitions using fire and acoustic rated British Gypsum plasterboard and metal stud systems. We then meticulously taped and filled the surfaces to create a smooth, high-quality decorative finish. For the back-of-house ceiling system, we began by installing a reliable Zentia grid and then fitted hygienic British Gypsum Satin Spa tiles. This produced a complete fire-rated system built exactly to the required safety and functionality specifications. Most importantly, we completed the job on time for this high-security airport environment.
